WHAT IS CRITICAL INCIDENT THERAPY?

When an individual experiences critical incident stress, they may first feel numb or disassociate as if the event happened to someone else. However, their physical and psychological well-being, as well as their future ability to function through triggers and additional stressors, will depend on how they manage this stress. Critical Incident Therapy can help not only lessen the impact of the critical incident and encourage the natural recovery process, but it can help manage and explore the ongoing impact of past traumatic events. Interventions include both short- and long-term treatments designed to mitigate traumatic stress and assemble a sense of psychological closure to promote posttraumatic growth.
